Performance Study of Hybrid Energy Storage System Combining Battery and Supercapacitor for EV Applications

Electric Vehicle (EV) possesses a significant potential to provide clean energy in vehicular technology. To increase the drive cycle efficiency and the driving range of EVs, which is considered to be the key barrier for its successful commercialization, its energy storage technology needs to be improved. The power requirement of an electric vehicle cannot be satisfied by the battery alone as it has a number of limitations to perform under transient condition. A combination of supercapacitor and battery together can fulfill the vehicle’s load demand effectively. This paper evaluates the performance of a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) in the context of EV, combining battery and super capacitor together connected in multiple parallel connected converter configuration. The model is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink platform and the dynamic performances are compared with that of a standard battery based energy storage system.
